Caledon Group’s Memorandum to Mayor and Premier

MEMORANDUM TO THE MAYOR OF THE CITY OF CAPE TOWN AND THE PREMIERS OFFICE

The Caledon Square Group is concerned, deeply concerned, about the strategies put in place by the City of Cape Town over the decision made by the Cape High Court concerning the Premier of the Western Cape’s application to open and accommodate refugees temporarily in all civic centres around the city.  

The community halls that are on the list attached to the court order in areas where the xenophobic violence was very bad. Further, the halls on the list are already full of displaced people and the conditions are not adequate for more people.  

Now we have the following requests and need an urgent response.

• To respect us as humans. We all have human rights behind us which no one can take away from us.
• We do not have anywhere to go, we cannot go the camps because we have already experienced these types of camps in our countries of origin. We know that they are not safe and we have experienced camps as venues where genocide happens. Where do you want us to be?
• We appeal to you and to the Council of the City of Cape Town to work hard today to get us a UN team from New York or Geneva to hear our demands.
• We appeal once again to your authority over the City of Cape Town to ask the Cape High Court to speed up our case so that we can leave South Africa in peace.
