Today, in large part due to the activism of TAC and our allies, South Africa has 5.8 million people living with HIV on antiretroviral (ARV) treatment, the world’s largest HIV programme. We fought hard for this. Over the years, we mobilised thousands to march in the streets, we have slept outside our politicians’ offices, we won vital court battles, we have spoken relentlessly in the media, we have held sit-ins and vigils, and we have faced intimidation and arrest. Our milestones have been many.

Yet changing donor priorities and diminishing funding for HIV is putting the future of TAC at risk. But the struggle is not over. Too many people are still dying from AIDS and TB. We have all the tools we need to halt these crises, but they continue when people living with HIV, people with TB, people who use drugs, sex workers, and the LGBTQIA+ community are pushed out of care or avoid it in the first place because of conditions in the health system and the ways we are treated.

Today TAC remains an organisation for the people – and is needed now more than ever.
