Media alert: TAC picket to demand Premier David Makhura and MEC for Health Dr Nomathemba Mokgethi urgently improve health services

Gauteng is currently suffering from a post social unrest hangover, after the province was destabilised in July 2021. Critically, 45 external pick-up points which cater for 94,924 people accessing chronic medication outside facilities were closed as a result of the unrest. Sadly, this is only one of numerous issues bedevilling the province’s health system. We have witnessed an unmitigated health crisis in the province over the past decade. These wide ranging crises include but are not limited to dire staff shortages; abhorrent staff attitudes; astronomical medico-legal costs; corruption, mismanagement and lack of accountability from duty bearers and wielders of private power; shortages and stockouts of medicine; overburdened facilities and unnecessary loss of lives.

TAC Gauteng will be demanding answers to broken promises from the Premier of the province, David Makhura, and the MEC for Health, Dr Nomathemba Mokgethi. This will mark the start of a radical campaign to advocate for the improvement of the state of healthcare in the province and for greater accountability for private and public power.
