TAC is 25. It’s been a quarter of a century of building an organisation from the ground up to what it is today – Our milestones have been many, but we look back at where it all started. It was in 1998 when 10 people staged a protest on the steps of St George’s Cathedral in Cape Town. They were calling out government’s silence and inaction on the AIDS epidemic raging at the time. People were dying in numbers from AIDS — we knew this from pages and pages of obituaries in newspapers, from traffic jams at cemeteries on Saturdays, and because we were watching people in our communities dying. From this protest on 10 December 1998, the Treatment Action Campaign was born.
