Zero New Infections, Zero Discrimination, Zero AIDS Related Deaths – TAC and Partners write Letter to EU Embassies
In negotiations for the final declaration of the UN High Level meeting on the Zero Draft, the European Union is blocking language which promotes a global treatment target; access to generic medicines; and financial commitments which could fuel the HIV response. Gravely concerned about this, the Treatment Action Campaign, MSF, SECTION27 incorporating the AIDS Law Project, and the AIDS and Rights Alliance for Southern Africa have sent this letter (see below) to the embassies of the United Kingdom, France, Germany and Switzerland in South Africa urging EU countries to cease pushing regressive language which could hinder the AIDS response.
A vital UN High Level-Meeting on HIV/AIDS is taking place from June 8-10 in New York. This meeting will assess the gains made in the global response to the HIV/AIDS epidemic, as well as what is needed to save lives and prevent future infections going forward into the next decade.
Central to the outcome of this meeting will be the final declaration agreed upon by Member States. The draft declaration, referred to as the Zero Draft, is currently being negotiated in New York.
