Invest in TB research!
Yesterday over a thousand TB activists marched to the Cape Town International Convention Centre where the 46th Union World Conference on Lung Health is taking place.
Amongst others, the memo asked the BRICS countries to tripple their investment in TB research. Currently the BRICS provide only 3.6% of global funding for TB research while the five BRICS countries together
account for 40% of the world’s annual 1.5m TB deaths.
The memorandum was received by South African Minister of Health Dr Aaron Motsoaledi in his capacity as chair of the WHO Stop TB Partnership.
The memo was endorsed by the following organisations: the Treatment Action Campaign (TAC), the Global Coalition of TB Activists (GCTA), Doctors without Borders (MSF), SECTION27, Global TB Community Advisory Board, Treatment Action Group (TAG), TB Proof, HIV i-Base and People’s Health Movement (PHM)
