Court order forces City of Cape Town to open community centres

At about 1am in the morning on 10 June, the Cape High Court ordered the City of Cape Town to make available community halls to temporarily settle “displaced foreigners”. The interdict was obtained by the Premier of the Western Cape. The TAC wrote a supporting affidavit.

At about 1am in the morning on 10 June, the Cape High Court ordered the City of Cape Town to make available community halls to temporarily settle “displaced foreigners”.  The interdict was obtained by the Premier of the Western Cape. The TAC wrote a supporting affidavit.

We are trying to use this order to achieve the following:

• Help the Caledon Square Group of about 170 displaced people move into the Sea Point Civic Centre. Currently they are staying in accommodation in the city centre, but this only lasts until Wednesday morning.
• Accommodate the approximately 200 people staying in a mosque in Salt River in one of two community halls in the area.
• Accommodate the approximate 50 people staying in the old TAC Muizenberg office in  the Muizenberg Civic Centre.

None of the above groups wish to move to one of the refugee camps established by the city.
