Barcelona Branch LGBTI consultation

Treatment Action Campaign; Barcelona Branch held a LGBTI Consultation on the 8th of September 2011 and in attendance at this consultation were representatives from the TAC  CHA, LGBTI Sector Members (Daveyton/Barcelona Branch),BEC Members, Ekurhuleni Metro Social Worker, GP Social Worker, NGO’s from Soweto & Nelson Mandela foundation.

The purpose of this consultation was to engage on issues that affects the sector and finds possible interventions thereof. Discussion: The fact that the community has a negative attitude to the LGBTI communities. The local police are not usually responsive to the calls often made by the LGBTI’s. Lack of collective efforts by LGBTI community was discussed in the meeting and it was raised that LGBTI people face challenges as individuals while others don’t have the strength to deal with them on a personal level.  It was raised at this consultation that training needs  to be done by EMM social worker as soon as they are organized on; self-worth for the sector. A follow up consultative meeting with the relevant stakeholders and authorities to address these challenges to be organized by done by TAC and the Nelson Mandela Foundation is being planned.
