Statistics are suspicious and appear to be plagiarised from an out-of-date source

On Sunday 4 May, the Sunday Independent reported  HIV statistics released by the Development Bank of South Africa. In particular, the report stated:

Numerous statistics about the South African HIV epidemic of varying quality have been collected. Here are some of the most reliable, high quality ones.

On 21 July 2006, the Department of Health released the annual HIV and syphillis antenatal survey2. What does this survey show? Is it of any use? Is it true that the number of people with HIV is finally stablising? What do we really know about the the prevalence of HIV and the number of AIDS deaths?

TAC has been asked these and many similar questions. They are good questions and so this analysis will try to provide useful answers. But to do so, we really need to explain HIV/AIDS statistics in South Africa generally.

Yesterday, City Press published views indicative of AIDS denialism by President Thabo Mbeki. We reprint the City Press article for fair use below.

Tragically, President Mbeki continues to belittle HIV/AIDS related deaths to justify his personal denialism.  He undermines government and ANC policy but he lacks the courage to do so openly as an AIDS denialist.
