Joint Refugee Leadership Sub-Committee on Education Letter to MEC for Education, Yousef Gabru (18 August 2008)

This letter, written on behalf of the education sub-committtee, requests a meeting to discuss the outstanding education issues with the newly appointed MEC for Education, Yousef Gabru.  Included in this letter is the Joint Refugee Leadership Committee's memorandum to the previous MEC as well as the response to them. 

 

Response Document from Department of Education (24 July 2008)

This document was discussed and given to the Joint Refugee Leadership during a meeting with the MEC for Education, Cameron Dugmore, in which they presented their memorandum (see below). This document contains a summary of the events of the meeting as well as the Department's plan for displaced learners access to education.

 

 Joint Refugee Leadership Memorandum to Department of Education (24 July 2008)

This memorandum was written by the JRL and presented to the MEC for Education.  It expresses the particular concerns of the leadership with respect to the education of displaced learners.  It expresses their urgent concerns regarding the failure of the department to provide access to education for displaced learners in camps and halls, as well as discrimination and bullying of those displaced learners who have been reintegrated and returned to schools.

 

Human Rights Commission Letter to Department of Education (16 July 2008)

  This letter expresses deep concern over the lack of consideration and planning for assuring that displaced learners have access to education.  This Constitutional right has worringly been unacknowledged and weeks after hte first outbreak of violence there has yet to be a coherent plan of action from the Department of Education to address the unique needs of displaced learners.

 

Head of Ministry of Education Response (16 June 2008)

This response served as an acknowledgement of reciept and the matter was referred to the Head of the Western Cape Department of Education and gave Lucinda Boniface as the contact.

  

Civil Society Memorandum to the Department of Education (5 June 2008)

This letter  expresses concerns about the inability of displaced learners to access to education as a result of being relocated to camps and halls away from their schools.  It also urges the DOE to take steps to ensure that those learners are not unfairly bullied or discriminated against.
