This letter was sent to the Premier's office expressing support for the closure of Soetwater on the grounds that it does not meet international standards, however it also calls for the opening of community halls and other safeguard measures to ensure that the process does not ignore the needs of the displaced people living in the camps.
Civil Society Memorandum Regarding Conditions at Soetwater (4 June 2008)
This letter was sent to all three levels of government, raising concerns about the inadequate living conditions within this camp, including the health risk, the lack of accessible transportation, inadequate communication, inappropriate livingarrangements, and other safety and security concerns. The letter also calls for the intervention of the UNHCR as per the request of the refugees living in the camp.
This memorandum appeals to the Provincial Government, in light of the Declaration of a disaster in the province to actively take the lead in dealing with the crisis, with particular consideration to the most pressing issues of: the conditions of Soetwater, the provision of alternate shelter, education for displaced learners, and involving the UNHCR.
